Medical Program (USydMP)

The University of Sydney Medical Program (USydMP) is a four-year, graduate-entry course leading to the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and may be awarded with Honours.

The program is designed to enable students to learn in a way that resembles the practice of medicine. Problem-based learning and early clinical experience both ensure that the context and relevance of the program are clear.

Information technologies support learning through the delivery of simulated medical cases and related educational materials and assist students to become familiar with the tools needed for evidence based practice.

Please visit the medical program website.

The Office of Medical Education is a core unit responsible for the implementation of the recommendations of the Curriculum Review and for the ongoing delivery and management of the University of Sydney Medical Program.

OPME and the USydMP

OPME's expertise centres in problem-based learning, assessment, curriculum design and development and evaluation activities to the USyd Medical Program. Currently, a major focus is the redevelopment of a new medical curriculum for 2008, working closely with Faculty academic disciplines based on campus and in the clinical schools. The internationalisation of health care courses is also a pivotal function we contribute to our Faculty, with the USyd medical curriculum is licensed to clients within Australia, the Middle East, South Africa and the UK at Federal level.

Research and development continues to be a strong focus of the Centre. Our current priorities include: admissions procedures to medical and dental school, patient safety, professionalism, clinical skills, eLearning initiatives to support assessment and teaching and learning, and learning outcomes.

In rural health, OPME is working with the University of Wollongong and the University of Western Sydney to produce a world class multi-university rural clinical school, based in the Northern Rivers of North New South Wales. In Indigenous medical education we are focusing on the Faculties cultural competency, which aims to recruit and retain more Indigenous students

OPME provides significant staff development support to the teaching staff of the medical program through a range of continuing professional development opportunities. Emphasis is placed on relevant and practical training, including short courses in curriculum design, clinical teaching and assessment.
